Fujifilm adds a compact fuji-X mount lens to its X-pro1 / X-E-1 and X-M1 camera lineup. This new lens can definitely be called a pancake lens, measuring no more than 23mm thick. It will be a great addition to the already interesting Fuji-X lenses lineup and a perfect combination with the X-M1, the compact budy of the two others. Lets meet the Fujinon XF27mmF2.8.
The announcement of this new Fujinon XF 27mm F2.8 lens is concomitant with that of the very compact APS-C mirrorless premium camera Fujifilm X-M1. This new camera weights only 330 grams with battery and memory card, it will be even more fun to use with a really compact lens as this new 27mm pancake lens that will give a 41mm equivalent when mounted on the X- M1 for example. This pancake lens weighs only 78 g and measures no more than 23 mm thick. This may be the most compact lens on the market capable of feeding an APS-C size sensor. I like Panasonic Lumix G pancake lenses but they are designed for smaller 4:3 sensors. (see my Panasonic GX1 review gallery) Some competitors have opted for a range of mirrorless compact APS-C cameras and are offering pancake lenses that have of a pancake, only the name. Did I think so strong to Sony that you guessed I was talking about the poor Sony NEX compact lens offer (despite the 16-50mm collapsible zoom lens of course). This new Fuji 27mm lens is too compact to receive a manual aperture ring. So if you are interested in this lens, if you are using an X-E1 or X-Pro1, you will need to update the firmware of your camera.
The Fujinon XF27mmF2.8 is equipped with a manual focus ring though, made of metal. I appreciate the fast aperture which opens up to f/2.8. Optically speaking, the 27mm should not disappoint the fans of the Fuji X-series who are used to top quality pieces of glass. The lens gets a special HT-EBC coating and its optical formula has one aspherical lens. Its diaphragm is built of 7 circular blades to smoothen the bokeh at the widest apertures. Its autofocus motorization has been designed to minimize the response time by moving all of the front lenses together.
