“What happens when mounting a Sony E mount lens on a Full Frame NEX-VG900 camcorder ?” asks Miranda from Portugal ! That is a good question. The NEX E-mount lenses are designed for APS-C sensors. The NEX-VG900 professional camcorder is based on a full frame sensor. Mounting a n APS-C NEX with E-mount lens on a larger sensor camera could lead to adding angle of view as the sensor surface is larger like with a medium format camera where a 50mm lens is a wide angle lens… but no. This won’t work the same with the Full Frame NEX-VG900. Actually, you will get an image which will correspond to the center of the sensor. The lens will crop the image as it has been designed for APS_C sensors. Therefore, its optical image circle is 1.5x narrower than the sensor. So, you may screw the entire NEX lens range on the NEX-VG900, but a 50mm will become a 50mm x 1.5 = 75mm lens. This is the exact same think with Nikon Full Frame DSLRs (D4 / D800 / D600) which can accept DX Nikkor lenses, but that will crop the sensor’s image and result in a longer forcal length and a smaller photo pixel count.
The NEX-VG900 video will remain in 1080p of course (that is only 2MP anyway). Note that the NEX-VG900 is fully compatible with all Alpha A-mount lenses.
