The Canon Powershot S110: BSI CMOS sensor 1/1, 7 ", Full HD 24p / 24-120mm Lens.

Canon is back for the 2012 Photokina with a successor to the S100 pocket size large sensor camera : meet the Powershot S110 that is imporved wityh a BSI CMOS sensor (still of 1/1.7″) of 12 megapixels and Wi-Fi.

The Canon S110 sensor is a 12-megapixel BSI CMOS at the generous 1/1.7″ format, which can be used up to ISO 12 800 thanks to the new DIGIC 5 processor. The lens is the same as on the S100, a 24-120mm f/2.0-4.9, fast enough in wide-angle, somewhat a bit slow in telephoto. But that is the price of compacity. The Canon G15 has a fast lens on the entire zoom range, f/1.8-2.8.The image is stabilized by Canon’s Image Stabilization Intelligent IS system that adapts its operation to the type of scene and conditions of the moment, on a catalog of 7 cases. Movies are recorded in Full HD 24p . The Canon S110 UI is optimized to provide easy control in PSAM modes while maintaining a very small form factor : the Canon S110 fits in any pocket. A manual adjusting ring that circles the lens can be assigned with a particular function, setting the aperture, ISO value, etc. …

Today, taking beautiful pictures is not enough for our cameras, they also need to communicate and this is the case of Powershot S110 with its built-in Wi-Fi connectivity allowing it to connect to a smartphone, tablet, a computer or a hotspot, your Wi-Fi network at home … to instantly share photos and videos on social networks like YouTube, Facebook… Canon is also releasing a free mobile app for iOS and Android tablets and smartphones.

The GPS sensor was sacrificed because of the arrival of the Wi-Fi. I will regret that (one can imagine to keep both, see the Canon EOS 6D DSLR Full Frame Wi-Fi and GPS). Question of cost ? Battery life ? Size ? Anyway, although the GPS is gone, you can take advantage of the GPS sensor of your smartphone or tablet to geotag the metadatas of your images.

RAW format, PSAM modes, 1/1.7″ sensor, the Powershot S110 offers key features to become an iconic high-end camera body. The Canon Powershot S110 will be available in october at a price of €449
