Sony NEX-5R : Wi-FI enabled mirrorless camera

Sony NEX-5R
The Sony NEX-5R is the forst Sony mirrorless camera with a Wi-Fi connexion.

As the IFA 2012 opens today, Sony unveils its forst Wi-Fi mirrorless camera based on the NEX-5N launched last year. Meet the Sony NEX-5R.

I told you so, you have been warned, you were expecting that anxiously : this is the Wi-Fi cameras / smartcameras season ! Sony comes today with a Wi-Fi camera, the NEX-5R that can connect to your computer to download its content, images pr videos and to any Wi-Fi idevice like a smartphone or a tablet for photo / video sharing with the entire world, Facebook, YouTube, Picasa… Sony will launch mobile applications to let you get the most out of the NEX-5R Wi-Fi connexion and others that will allow you to customize your camera.

The NEX-5R is very similar to last year’s NEX-5N : it has a Fast AF system with both contrast detection and phase detection sensors, is is thin, very thin and lighweight, it offers the 16MP APS-C Exmor CMOS sensor I love on my Nikon D7000, Full HD movie recording up to 60p, HDR, 10 fps burst shooting, Superior Auto mode (this multi-image mode I really appreciated in the Sony HX20V review), creative filters, a bokeh mode that works very well, an efficient handheld night shot mode, a nice 3″ / swivel / touchscreen (XTraFine LCD panel with 921,600 dots). Expect fun, efficient operation and outstanding image quality from this smartcamera that still has one major weakness : it still hasn’t got any pop-up flash, but is delivered with a small (GN=7) external flash that you have to mount on the camera’s hotshoe, think of keeping with you all the time and thinking of mounting when needed, trying not to loose it… pure stupidity ! How can I recommend any consumer camera to any amateur photographer that want a hassle free camera if this camera is deprived from the easy of use and peace of mind of a built)in flash ?….

Will we see a NEX-7R coming to the market ?….

Available applications for the NEX-5R

As of today and the update of the cloud service by Sony, PlayMemories Online, you can download additional pieces of software for the Wi-Fi mirrorless camera. The first applications are :

  • Picture Effect+ : adds new filters and digital effects to the NEX-5R
  • Bracket Pro : an auto bracketing mode (exposure bracketing, that will let you chose the best exposure
  • Smart Remote control : speaks for itself, allows you to remotely control the NEX-5R and see what it sees
  • Time-Lapse : to record timelapse movies
  • – Cinematic : captures a serie of images and creates an animation (a fun one Sony say…)

Sony NEX-5R prices and availability

Sony bill start shipping the NEX-5R early October. Sony has priced the NEX-5R bundled with the 18-55mm lens at $749 which is $50 more than the NEX-5N when it was launched last year. The Wi-Fi should defintelety be worth these extra bucks and I am glad to see such a valuable camera enhanced with a Wi-Fi connexion, but… it still has a major hassle, its flash is not a pop-up flash, it is not built-in and this won’t allow me to consider this camera for any amateur photographer who is seeking peace of mind with its camera.
