Canon Selphy CP900 : Wi-Fi enabled photo printer

Jul 12, 2012 Comments Off by

The Canon SELPHY CP900 is Canon’s new generation of thermal dye 4×6″ / 10x15cm photo printer. It gets a Wi-Fi connexion in order to print and browse, wirelessly,  images stored on your computer. But that is not it. Thanks to its Wi-Fi function and the Canon Easy-PhotoPrint mobile application, you can now easily print the photos that, till now, were kept in your iPhone, iPad and Android smartphones and tablets.

The Canon Selphy CP900 printer gets some photo enhancement software that will reduce red eyes, balance brightness, contrast and sharpness of your images. Just like any modern digital camera, the CP900 has a scene recognition function that will analyze faces, colors and subject distance to help its firmware improving your images with more vivid colors and globally, better looking images.

It might not be the 2012 biggest looser winner, but, compact and light, this new generation of printer is more mobile than ever with a reduction in weight of 14% and in size of 16.5% compared with the CP800 launched last year that is already quite small without the photo paper cartridge slided in. You can practically take the CP900 with you for family events to print out freshly shot images for your mates. Neat. To enhance its mobile side, Canon sell an optional battery and charger.

The printing technology used by the CP900 is “thermal dye“. It offers lab grade quality that last 100 years and the printing process is pretty magical. It reminds us all the analog technology in the darkroom when the image appears on the photo paper. My kids love watching the printer applying the layers and the image that appears by magic with the right colors when the 3rd layer is on. The printer applies and additional layer that will protect the photo. The Selphy CP900 prints a 4×6″ in 47s and is compatible with the PictBridge standard.
