The Canon EF-S 18-135mm IS STM telezoom lens brings an all new autofocus engine, called STM, that is promised to be both fast and silent, perfect for videos. Used on the EOS 650D / Rebel T4i announced today, the EF-S 18-135mm IS STM should offer a smooth user experience. The 650D / T4i has a new hybrid sensor which offer Full time contrast detection autofocus when shooting videos or using the LiveView. Canon told me this AF is VERY fast and good at tracking moving objects. We saw (check out the Nikon D3200 review) that phase detection AF is not suitable for movies : the focus is often lost, the lens goes in and out constantly and the AF drive noises are recorded by the camera’s microphone. So, I warmly welcome this new type of autofiocus motorization on this lens that will be a perfect match to the new dual AF of the EOS 650D / Rebel T4i.
The Canon EF-S 18-135mm IS STM telezoom lens offers a 7.5x focal length range and is optically stabilized by the smart IS system which detects if you are talking regular images or trying to create a filé effect. If so, it lock the stab on the vertical axis like you would do yourself on sport lenses with mode 1 / mode 2 on the lens barrel.
Its 7 circular blades diaphragm is controlled by a magnetic system (EMD) for precise aperture setting, appreciated by videographers. btw, videographers will enjoy the “active” mode of the stabilization.
Canon optics engineers have designed this lens with one UD glass lens in addition to one high-precision molding element and all lenses get a Super Spectra coating intended for avoiding flare and ghost images.
Today, Canon unveiled an other STM lens, the EF 40mm f/2.8 STM.
