I would !
Spring 2012 seems to be the camera rumors spring ! A few days ago appeared the Panasonic GF5 and the Samsung NX20. Now comes the time of a brand we have been talking AF-S Nikkor 18-300mm f/3.5-5.6G ED DX VR. This lens, once mounted on a DX Nikon camera like the D700 or D5100, will give an equivalent to a 27.5-450mm. Nikonrumors has all technical specs and I think I could get one of these for my D7000 when I want to travel light for vacations, travel and family photos because :
- Although its 300mm longest focal length, it offers the same f/5.5 maximum aperture as the 18-200mm.
- Optical built sounds promising : 3 aspherical lenses and 3 ED glass elements
- It has the silent ultrasonic autofocus motorization (SWM) and internal focusing (IF range)
But… talking of traveling light… the AF-S 18-300mm f/3.5-5.6G ED DX VR lens weight 48% more than the 18-200mm (830gr vs 560gr.). I know a lot of amateur photographers who like versatile high range zooms like them because they are light and versatile. They offer a quality alternative to bridge cameras (although I finally found the Fuji X-S1 to offer decent quality, review coming soon), but the future will tell if the 18-300mm meets the photographers needs. We also miss the final price tag which can be a bit high I am afraid (3ED glass…), but I would also bet that the 18-300mm will have a better image quality than the 18-200mm II.
I hope that Nikon will rescheddule the official launch of the AF-S 18-300mm f/3.5-5.6G ED DX VR to a sooner than originally planned date.
So would you buy the AF-S 18-300mm f/3.5-5.6G ED DX VR lens for your DX Nikon DSLR ?
