Sony Cyber-shot DSC-HX20V and HX10V

Sony’s technology bombshell 2012 camera is undoubtedly this new 20x megazoom compact camera : the Cyber-shot DSC-HX20V. Speedy AF, Exmor R sensor, 1080/50P video recording, luxury screen… neat. The HX20V gets a little brother, the 16x HX10V.

In some countries, Sony will launch a Wi-Fi enabled version : the Cyber-shot DSC-HX30V.

20x zoom lens

Le’s meet this new G lens SOny has engineered in 2012 to reach the actual zoom range of 20x. What I like the most is the fact that Sony has preserved the short focal length, the hX20 lens is a 25-500mm equivalent. This new superhuge focal length range is now permitted by optical technology, but also and probably mainly by embedded optical correction softwares and powerful processors that deal with distorsion, chromatic aberration, vignetting and loss of sharpness on the field. Let’s point out the pretty fast aperture of the G lens with a max aperture of f/2.2-5.8 as well as its minimal focusing distance of 1 cm only in macro mode.
The CYber-shot DSC-HX10V gets the HX9 last year’s flagship zoom lens, a 16x.

Speedy AF

Here is the story : mirrorless cameras had to improve their contrast AF in order to compete against DSLR and this has forced camera manufacturers to work hard on contrast detection autofocus systems. As a result of this, technology has improved and Sony is now using their NEX technology in their Cyber-shot range. I like that. According to Sony, the HX20V would be able to focus in as little as 0.20s in day light and 0.20s in low-light conditions.

Exmor R sensor and functions

Logically, Sony has placed their latest backside illuminated CMOs sensor, the 18-megapixel Exmor R sensor also used in the HX200V bridge camera. This sensor enabled the HX20V to offer sky high ISO settings (up to ISO 12,800 in extended mode) with results we can’t wait to check in our review of the HX20V. This sensor with high recording frequency allows the HX20V to offer the following derived functions :

  • – 1920×1080/50p video recording (with stereo sound)
  • – 10 fps burst rate in 18 megapixel resolution
  • – 3D still images
  • – Swipe and 3D panoramas

GPS and 921 Kpx screen

Obvisously, the Cyber-shot HX20V is perfect for travel photography thanks to ots 20x zoom lens, so versatile. But is also gets a GPS sensor, a feature that cnsums a little bit of batterylife but that I love and regret not to see an all cameras, especially embedded on DSLRs…

High-end camera, the Sony HX20V gets the nice XtraFine TrueBlack LCD screen of 3″ with 921,600 dots.

Sony Cyber-shot DSC-HX20V price and availability

The HX20V is not the cheapest digital camera. Laucnhed at $420, t is among the most expensive yet powerful, opacked with the latest technology and a perfect travel camera to tour the globe with. In Sony’s 2012 Cyber-shot range, you can find the exact same functions in a 30x zoom lens bridge camera with a 3″ tiltable screen, the Cyber-shot DSC-HX200V, quite convincing, and also a cheaper camera, the HX10V that gets last year’s flagship HX9 16 (24-384mm) zoom lens in the same technology bundle (18-MP Exmor R, 50p Full HD video, panoarma, 10 fps, GPS, light-speed autofocus, 921 Kpixels screens…).
Today, Sony unveiled its 2012 waterproof camera : the Cyber-shot DSC-TX200V.
