Panasonic ZS20 / TZ30 : 20x zoom lens, GPS, Full HD video

Panasonic  announces today the new ZS / TZ superzoom compact camera : the ZS20 / FT30. It is called ZS20 in America and TZ30 in Europe. IOt features a 20x zoom lens (like the Fujifilm FinePix F770EXR) and I love the idea to have a camera that fits in your pocket that can shoot at 24mm wide and at 480mm in telephoto ! This is the kid of camera I have. I bought a Sony HX5 back in 2010 on my way to the Everglades Park and Key West. I really enjoyed its huge focal range and its GPS. The Panasonic TZ30 / ZS20 also has a built-in GPS sensor with a databes of one million locations.

But the ZS30 is also interesting because of its MOS sensor, that Panasonic says it is high sensibility… it can therefore record Full HD movies and  at 50p, if you please !…. with stero sound. It gets a mini-HDMI connexion to share 3D images or videos on a 3D HDTV.

Its 3″ / 460,000 dots touch-screen is a great addition to the user interface. panasonic has totally understood how to mix physical commands and touch-screen settings to improve the user experience. I like the touch-AF of the GF3 / GX1 for instance and that is a must-have feature when recording movies to let the camera focus a certain area, like on the GH2.

Here are the key points that would make me buy a Panasonic TZ30 / ZS20 :
– 24-480mm lens
– latest image stabilization system : Power O.I.S. with Active mode in video
– MOS technology and Full HD / 60p movies
– GPS (I travel a lot and LOVE GPS cameras)
– 3″ touch-screen AND physical UI
– HDR / miniature effect and intervallometer

What Panasonic has missed on the ZS20 ?
Sure they did miss something : Wi-Fi ! How come they launch their Lumix 2012 range flagship without Wi-Fi to allow wireless upload of photos, videos, instant share on FB, Youtube… or display videos and stills on your Viera HDTV ?…

iA mode, PSAM, 2 custom settings, scene mode... which we had a RAW format available...

The Panasonic Lumix DMC-ZS20 / DMC-TZ30 touch-screen : 3" / 460,000 dots... could have been better.
